Agriculture Mechanics & Welding Instructor
Job Description
Reports to: Campus Principal Dept./School: Assigned Campus / NWISD Contract: 10–12 Month (as assigned) Exemption Status: Exempt/Professional
Primary Purpose
The Agriculture Mechanics Instructor provides rigorous, hands-on instruction aligned with the Texas Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources (AFNR) Career Cluster and the Agriculture Mechanics Program of Study. The instructor prepares students for postsecondary education, industry careers, and industry-based certifications—specifically American Welding Society (AWS) certification pathways—while maintaining the highest standards of shop safety, equipment maintenance, and risk management.
Qualifications
Education/Certification:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university (highly preferred).
- Valid Texas Teaching Certificate in Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources OR the ability to obtain certification.
- For Candidates without a Teaching Degree: Minimum of 2–5 years of full-time, wage-earning experience in welding, fabrication, or agricultural mechanics within the last 10 years.
- Must be willing to pursue a Texas Career and Technical Education (CTE) certificate (Trade and Industrial Education) through a District of Innovation plan or alternative certification program if not already certified.
- Current AWS certifications (e.g., Certified Welder, Certified Welding Educator) are highly preferred.
- Must have or obtain a Class B CDL.
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Demonstrated expertise in agricultural mechanics and welding fabrication.
- In-depth knowledge of American Welding Society (AWS) standards and welding codes.
- Strong understanding of OSHA regulations and shop safety practices.
- Knowledge of curriculum and instruction within the AFNR Career Cluster.
- Ability to manage a laboratory-based instructional setting and maintain complex equipment.
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Experience:
- Demonstrated competency in agricultural science and mechanics.
- One year of student teaching or an approved internship (if following a traditional certification path).
Major Responsibilities and Duties
Instructional Strategies
- Develop and deliver TEKS-aligned instruction in Agriculture Mechanics courses, including Agricultural Mechanics, Structures Design & Fabrication, Equipment Design & Fabrication, and Power Systems.
- Integrate theory and applied learning in blueprint reading, CNC operation, electrical/mechanical systems, small engine repair, hydraulics, and metal fabrication.
- Provide specialized instruction in oxy-fuel cutting and plasma cutting.
- Prepare students for industry-based certifications, including AWS Certified Welder performance qualifications and NCCER (if applicable).
- Develop and implement lesson plans that fulfill district curriculum requirements and reflect accommodations for individual student differences.
- Use technology to strengthen the teaching and learning process.
FFA & Student Leadership
- Serve as an advisor to the local FFA chapter, planning leadership, career development, and competitive activities.
- Support student participation in Agricultural Mechanics CDEs, welding competitions, and Leadership Development Events (LDEs).
- Supervise student project construction for livestock shows and ensure compliance with safety standards.
- Oversee Supervised Agricultural Experience Programs (SAEP) and supervise school farm activities as needed.
Classroom & Shop Management
- Manage, maintain, and troubleshoot shop equipment and tools to ensure a functional, industry-simulated learning environment.
- Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical and social development of students.
- Manage student behavior in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
- Take all necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Maintain a current inventory of all fixed assets related to the program.
Professional Growth and Communication
- Establish and maintain professional relationships and open communication with parents, students, and community members.
- Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
- Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other required documents.

Posture/Motion:
- Prolonged standing and walking.
- Frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, and crawling while supervising shop projects.
- Frequent overhead reaching and repetitive hand motions.
Lifting:
- Regular lifting and carrying of, or moving, heavy items and equipment (45–50 lbs+).
Environment:
- Work both inside and outside; exposure to extreme temperatures, humidity, and sunlight.
- Work around machinery with moving parts and moving vehicles.
- Work on uneven or slippery surfaces and around animals.
- Frequent districtwide and statewide travel.
Mental Demands:
- Maintain emotional control under stress; work prolonged or irregular hours.
